Retaking the CIA Challenge Exam: A Practical Plan

Not passing the CIA Challenge Exam first time is disappointing, but it is not the end of the road.. What matters now is learning from your first attempt and using the weeks ahead to prepare for your next one.

If you do not understand why you failed, you risk making the same mistakes again.

What the retake rules allow

The IIA lets you retake the exam during any available testing window within your three-year eligibility period. The exam is offered in February, June, September, and November, and your eligibility period cannot be extended, so your next step is to choose a window and work backwards. Check The IIA’s latest rules and fees to make sure you have the most up-to-date information before you register again.

A practical plan for your next attempt

  1. Take a short break. Give yourself a few days to rest before you start studying again. Then reflect on your first attempt. Which topics did you feel confident about? Which ones were difficult? Did you run out of time?
  1. Identify what went wrong. Was the problem a lack of knowledge, misreading questions, or poor time management? Each problem needs a different solution. If you struggled with the content, focus on those topics. If you misread questions, practise identifying exactly what each question asks.
  1. Choose your next exam window. Check when you can take the exam again and how much time you need to prepare. Choose a date that gives you enough time to address your weaker areas rather than rushing into another attempt.
  1. Focus on the higher-weighted topics. Use the exam syllabus to decide where to spend your study time. Give more attention to topics that carry more marks, while still reviewing the entire syllabus.
  1. Practise under exam conditions. Complete timed practice questions to improve your speed and accuracy. Review every incorrect answer and make sure you understand why you got it wrong and what the question was testing.
  1. Prepare for exam day. Plan your travel or testing arrangements in advance. Get enough sleep, eat well, and check the exam requirements so you can focus on the questions rather than last-minute problems. For more tips, read our exam-day guide.
