Distractors and Scoring: How to Avoid Losing Easy Marks on the CIA Challenge Exam

Two things quietly cost candidates marks, an option that looks right but is not, and a question left blank. Both can be avoided to get a pass.

How distractors work

Most CIA Challenge Exam questions give you four options. Usually, one or two are easy to rule out, especially when they are extreme or ignore the Standards. The tricky option is often the one that sounds reasonable but does not follow what the Standards require. These wrong answers are called distractors, and they are designed to catch candidates who read quickly or rely on instinct.

If multiple-choice questions are difficult for you, practise regularly and review every mistake. Practise more and review every wrong answer until you can explain why the distractor was wrong. Make sure you understand why your choice was wrong and why the correct answer is better.

A practical example: Sample Question

Before the final report is issued, management fixes a control weakness found during the engagement. What should the internal auditor do?

  1. Remove the finding, since it has been resolved
  2. Verify the corrective action, then report the finding and note that it was corrected
  3. Wait until next year’s audit to report it
  4. Ask the board whether to include it

C and D are easy to remove. A is the distractor. It sounds efficient and fair to management, but the finding still belongs in the report. B is correct, because the auditor verifies the fix and reports both the finding and the corrective action.

The right answer is the one that follows the process, to verify, then report.

How the exam is scored

The exam uses scaled scoring. The number of scored questions you answer correctly is converted to a scaled score out of 750, and you need 600 to pass. Because the conversion allows for the difficulty of your exam, 600 does not equal a fixed number of correct answers, and anyone who gives you an exact figure is guessing.

What this means for you

Do you believe in miracles? Unless you do, let us be realistic, a blank answer can never earn a mark. Answer every question. If time is running out, use the last minutes to make sure nothing is blank. Remove the options you know are wrong, then make your best choice from what is left.
